Activism:
This week we really didn’t do much concerning the Girl Scouts. I didn’t have any meetings or any other service opportunities, so mostly this week was pretty quiet.
Reflection:
We have been focusing on Girls Studies this past week. One of the main points of this analysis is on intersectionality – and the inequitable distribution of resources among girls (Perez, 12 April). I have seen a lot of this with the girls that we’ve served this semester. Some of them are middle class, but some are obviously from families with economic hardship, and in working with these populations, it’s apparent that some have other social issues as well.
The Girl Scouts makes an effort to reach girls in these communities, and offers “Scouterships” for them to participate even if they can’t pay the membership fee or for the required insignia. This is so important that they try to enrich these girls’ lives with what Girl Scouting can provide – leadership opportunities, socialization, extra-curricular instruction, among other benefits.
Reciprocity: I have been really active with them this semester, even outside the scope of this course, just because it’s an organization that I really enjoy working with and I find it so worthwhile to volunteer with them. I’m glad that I took this course, because it kind of gave me an incentive to work with them – i.e. a class requirement. I’ve always wanted to make time for it but it’s just extremely hard given all of my other commitments, but this semester I found out that it really was worth it.
